Iranian Diplomat Blames West for Failure of Syria Conference

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Iranian foreign ministry official took the West responsible for the failure of the Geneva 2 peace conference on Syria.

Speaking at a press conference in Moscow on Monday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian underlined that the West’s policies and the so-called opposition’s insistence on forming a transitional government and unseating Syrian President Bashar al-Assad were the main reasons behind the failure of the talks on February 15.

The Geneva 2 talks between delegations representing the Syrian government and the foreign-backed opposition ended without any breakthrough with both sides sticking to their positions and the latter insisting on the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s administration.

Amir Abdollahian also warned that outcomes of the growth of extremism and terrorism in Syria can pose major threats to the global security and stability.

He called for collective efforts to counter terrorism and expansion of extremism by preventing certain states to support extremist groups in Syria.

He also suggested that regional talks are required for finding a solution to the chaos in Syria.

Syria has been entangled in a deadly crisis since 2011 which has so far claimed the lives of at least 130,000 individuals including civilians. The crisis is believed to be the worst civil outrage during the past 100 years. The millions displaced in the atrocities have caused a civilian emergency state in the neighboring states.
