In a statement on Monday night, Nasser Kanaani sympathized with the families of the victims and the wounded in the recent tragic events in Bangladesh.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran is firm and steadfast in its friendly ties with Bangladesh, and in this sensitive and important situation, it stands by the Muslim, friendly and brotherly people of Bangladesh,” the spokesman added.
He also expressed hope for the immediate restoration of peace and stability to the major Muslim state, under the rule of law, unity, cohesion and integrity of the people and the wise role played by the elites of Bangladesh.
Referring to the deep and historical bonds between the Iranian and Bangladeshi nations, Kanaani stressed that Iran will always remain a good and reliable friend of the people of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country after weeks of protests against her government in which hundreds of people were killed.
Hasina, 76, quit on Monday after last month’s student-led protests against a quota system for government jobs turned into a popular call for her sacking.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged calm in Bangladesh after the resignation and departure of prime minister Sheikh Hasina, and highlighted the need for a “peaceful, orderly and democratic transition,” his spokesman said.
