Iran Calls for UNESCO Condemnation of Heritage Damage

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s heritage campaign director demanded UNESCO condemn damage to the Abbasian Mosque near Isfahan’s Naqsh-e Jahan Square during the US-Israeli aggression on Iran.

He criticized the international agencies ECOMOS and ECOM for failing to voice condemnation of destruction of historic sites amid hostilities towards Iran and highlighted ongoing threats by the US-Israeli aggressors against Iranian cultural treasures.

The mosque suffered serious damages after an attack on south perimeter of the Naqsh-e Jahan square in recent weeks, highlighting the vulnerability of heritage landmarks even when clearly identified globally.

"We have not seen any statement from UNESCO or its agencies condemning these attacks," he said.

ECOMOS and ECOM, both part of UNESCO, maintain active offices in Iran but have issued no condemnation highlighting the need for increased global protection cultural heritage sites during wartime situations which often results marking them with blue shield signs visible from air to prevent strikes.

Despite being clearly identified worldwide, these culturally significant sites continue to face threats from US-Israeli attacks.
