Iran's ambassador to Mexico, Abolfazl Pasandideh, has called on FIFA to reconsider the venue for Iran's national football team's matches at the upcoming World Cup and move them to Mexico due to security worries in the United States.
Pasandideh made the remarks in an exclusive interview with UNO TV.
He highlighted concerns over guarantees for the safety of Iran's team.
The Iranian national football team, currently ranked 20th in the FIFA standings, has qualified for the next World Cup as the second representative from Asia.
The team aims to participate in the premier international football competition for the seventh time.
The location of Iran's matches has become a key issue amid security concerns.
Iran's games are scheduled in the United States, one of the co-hosts alongside Canada and Mexico.
Some argue that sufficient security assurances for Iran's national team are lacking.
The matter gained attention after US President Donald Trump issued an alarming social media threat against the Iranian squad, raising fears of a targeted attack and exposing the perilous risks facing the team amid escalating geopolitical tensions.
In response to these concerns, Pasandideh urged FIFA to revise its decision and transfer Iran's matches to Mexico.
“Without Iran’s presence, the FIFA World Cup will no longer symbolize friendship and peace,” he added.
The diplomat stressed that FIFA should return to football's core principles as a platform for promoting peace and friendship among nations.
Pasandideh pointed out that under FIFA regulations, host countries are obligated to ensure the security of all participating teams.
He argued that a reassessment of the situation appears necessary.
Meanwhile, he expressed appreciation for the support from the Mexican government.
Pasandideh referenced statements made on Tuesday by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who declared her country's readiness to host Iran's national team matches.
Ultimately, the decision on any venue changes for Iran's matches rests with FIFA. The organization must carefully evaluate security conditions and hosting requirements for the World Cup.
In another part of the UNO TV interview, the Iranian ambassador addressed broader international tensions involving the US-Israeli aggression against Iran.
He expressed hope that the current situation would not persist.
Pasandideh emphasized Iran's high military preparedness while reiterating opposition to war, saying: “We abhor war, for in the end, it is the innocent who pay the price.”
The diplomat added that developments largely depend on decisions by US President Donald Trump.
However, he stated that Iran is open to solutions leading to peace, provided responsibilities are recognized.
