20-Year Nuclear Freeze Proposed by US, Rejected by Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – US President Donald Trump claimed on Friday that he has no objection to a 20-year suspension of Iran’s nuclear activities, while reports indicate that the proposal itself originated from the American side and was firmly rejected by Tehran.

Politics

Speaking to journalists aboard Air Force One as he returned to Washington from China on Friday, Trump said that he would be open to Iran suspending its nuclear program for 20 years, but that it had to be done with a “real commitment”.

Check: Trump has phrased his remarks in such a way as to suggest that Iran or a third party had proposed a 20-year suspension of Iran’s nuclear activities, and now Trump wants to magnanimously accept it!

But the reality of the matter is that this 20-year suspension is fundamentally a proposal made by the Americans themselves, which has been decisively rejected by Iran.

Not only is this proposal rejected, but Iran is currently insisting that it will not enter into the nuclear issue at all, and the texts Iran has delivered to the Pakistani mediator are focused on the issue of ending the war.

Iran has made it clear that without an end to the war on all fronts, including Iran and Lebanon, and without the implementation of certain measures by the US --such as the release of Iran’s blocked assets, a US commitment to the complete lifting of sanctions, the enforcement of Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, the end of the naval blockade, the payment of compensation and damages for the warmongering against Iran, the withdrawal of US forces from the areas surrounding Iran, and several other issues-- fundamentally no discussion whatsoever will take place regarding nuclear details.
