Source Reveals Details of A Significant Event regarding Structure of Islamabad Understanding

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A source close to Iran’s negotiating team provided Tasnim with details of a significant event on the last day of the talks.

Politics

The informed source said Clause 13 of the memorandum of understanding between Iran and the US relates to the fact that until some other clauses of the understanding are implemented, negotiations on the final agreement, i.e. on the nuclear issue, will not take place.

According to the source, until the last day of the negotiations, Clause 13 included Clauses 4, 5, 10 and 11.

The source noted that Clause 4 relates to the lifting of the naval blockade, Clause 5 to the beginning of the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, Clause 10 to the lifting of sanctions related to the sale of Iranian oil, petrochemicals and derivatives, and Clause 11 to the beginning of the release of Iranian frozen assets.

Therefore, the source added, Clause 13 indicated that if these 4 mentioned clauses (4, 5, 10, and 11) are not fulfilled, the negotiations for the final agreement will not begin.

The informed source emphasized that an important event that occurred on the last day of the negotiations was that, following Iran’s follow-up, Clause 1 was also added to Clause 13.

The source said the important meaning of this event is that if any war or military operations, such as assassinations, etc., occur against Iran or the resistance front, including Lebanon, according to the understanding, no negotiations for the final agreement will take place and naturally the implementation of the MoU (including the opening of the Strait of Hormuz) will be suspended in terms of Article 13.

Iran intended from the beginning that if such events occurred, that is, if war or assassination or military operations took place, it would suspend any negotiations and give a reciprocal and proportionate response to the actions of the United States or Israel, however, with the addition of Clause 1 to Clause 13, this issue has actually been clarified in the text, the source went on to say.

Early on Monday, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that a peace deal had been reached between Iran and the US following weeks of negotiations mediated by Pakistan with support from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. According to Sharif, the agreement provides for the immediate and permanent end of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, and is scheduled to be formally signed in Switzerland on June 19.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council subsequently announced that the finalized MoU would end war and military operations across all fronts and that future negotiations would proceed only after implementation of commitments by the other side. An informed source also said that final amendments proposed by Iran included provisions related to the management of the Strait of Hormuz and guarantees for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
