Iran Urges IAEA to Condemn US Attack on Darkhoveyn Nuclear Site

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman called on the UN nuclear watchdog to explicitly condemn a recent US attack on Darkhoveyn nuclear power plant construction site, saying the strike exposed Washington's hostility toward Iran's scientific and industrial progress.

Speaking at a weekly press conference on Monday, Esmaeil Baqaei said the American attack on the Darkhoveyn nuclear facility in Iran’s southwestern province of Khuzestan must be condemned by the international community.

"Iran expects the IAEA Director General himself to clearly state his position in condemnation of the US crime," he said.

The spokesman criticized the UN nuclear watchdog's silence over the attack, saying such inaction would only further erode Iran's confidence in the agency.

"This silence and indifference certainly do not strengthen our trust in the IAEA," he said.

Baqaei stressed, however, that the agency's failure to react does not alter the legal nature of the incident.

"The essential issue is the attack on a country's peaceful nuclear facilities, which is a violation of international law," he said.

He described the strike as "disgraceful," saying it exposed the falsehood of Washington's accusations against Iran's nuclear program.

"The Darkhoveyn facility was intended for energy generation. This attack shows that the United States has a problem with Iran's knowledge and industry," Baqaei stated.

Asked whether the attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities could prompt Tehran to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Baqaei said all issues concerning Iran's national interests remain under continuous review.

"For now, we remain a member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. We are fully aware of our commitments under the treaty, while at the same time making our expectations clear," the spokesman added.

The remarks came a day after the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) condemned a "terrorist and unlawful" US attack on the construction site of the Darkhoveyn nuclear power plant in the southwestern province of Khuzestan. The organization said the facility, intended for peaceful energy generation, was struck by multiple projectiles in the early hours of Sunday, calling the assault a blatant violation of international law and an attack on one of the symbols of Iran's scientific self-sufficiency.
