Support for War against Iran among Trump Voters Plummets: Poll

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Voters who backed US President Donald Trump in the presidential election are dropping their support for the US-Israeli war against Iran given its costs, according to a new poll, which found support from MAGA voters falling by 13 points.

A Politico poll released Wednesday asked voters whether the war should continue even if it increases costs in the US. It found that 50 percent of voters who backed Trump supported the war even if it increases costs in the US in May, compared to 37 percent in July, The Hill reported.

Nearly 1 in 5 MAGA voters say the US should end the war regardless of the costs.

The poll showed 37 percent of MAGA voters say the war should only continue if it does not increase costs in the US, an 8-percent increase from May.

The majority of MAGA voters say the war has caused gas prices to rise, at 57 percent. This is an opinion commonly shared among all other voters, including those who cast ballots for former Vice President Kamala Harris on 2024.

Pollsters also found that 20 percent of Trump voters say gas prices would have risen less under a Democratic president. Thirty-five percent say gas prices would have risen at the same amount under a Democrat, while 34 percent say gas prices would have increased more with a Democrat in the White House.

The war against Iran has long been unpopular with the American public, with recent polling showing that the war is increasingly unpopular.

The Economist/YouGov last week found that 46 percent of Americans say they believe the war will go on for longer than “a year or more” from now. Another 46 percent said the war will go on for “more than a month but less than a year” from now.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll released last month found that only 24 percent of Americans think the war with Iran was worth the tens of billions of dollars spent, the service members who were killed or injured, the military installations and equipment damaged or destroyed and the energy crisis caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Four US service members have been killed in Iranian attacks, as well as nearly 100 who have been injured since July 7, when the conflict resumed, according to the US Defense Department. The total American death toll reached 18.

War Secretary Pete Hegseth told lawmakers on Capitol Hill on Tuesday that the US has spent $37.5 billion in the war against Iran.

The Politico survey was conducted July 13-15 and included 2,061 respondents. The margin of error is 2.2 percentage points.
