In a statement released on Saturday night, the Iranian Foreign Ministry denounced the attack on the Iranian commercial vessel, which occurred in the early hours of July 25, saying the explosion aboard the ship left one crew member dead and another injured.
The ministry described the attack as a violation of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter and an act of aggression that could further escalate the ongoing conflict.
It said the Ukrainian leadership's acknowledgment of the attack demonstrated the continuation of Kiev's hostile and irrational policy toward the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Reiterating that Iran has never intervened in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Foreign Ministry said the attack on an Iranian commercial vessel constituted an internationally wrongful act and reflected an attempt to dangerously expand the scope of war and insecurity.
Iran called on the UN Security Council, European countries, and all UN member states to adopt a responsible position and hold the Ukrainian government accountable for a criminal and provocative act.
The ministry also stressed that, in accordance with international law and the inherent right of self-defense, Iran would not hesitate to defend its national interests and security, warning that responsibility for the consequences of the incident rests with the Ukrainian government and its supporters.
