The Ukrainian chargé d'affaires was summoned to the Iranian Foreign Ministry on Saturday night by the Director General for Eurasian Affairs following Ukraine’s military attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea in the early hours of July 25. The attack killed one Iranian sailor and wounded several others.
During the meeting, the Iranian official conveyed the Islamic Republic's strong protest over the hostile and criminal act.
He also told the Ukrainian diplomat that the attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea was not only a violation of the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and an act of aggression, but also posed a clear threat to the security of all Caspian littoral states. He stressed that the Ukrainian government must be held accountable for the attack and bring those who ordered and carried out the strike to justice.
He also emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran will firmly defend its national security and interests and will not leave any aggression against the lives and property of its citizens unanswered.
Earlier, the Iranian Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a violation of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter and an act of aggression that could further escalate the conflict. It said the Ukrainian leadership's acknowledgment of the attack reflected the continuation of Kyiv's hostile approach toward Iran.
