In a message to his Indonesian counterpart Prabowo Subianto on Sunday, Pezeshkian expressed sympathy with the Indonesian government and nation, particularly the families affected by the disaster.

He also declared Iran’s readiness to provide emergency relief and medical assistance to the affected areas.

“Under these difficult circumstances, while expressing readiness to provide any relief and medical assistance, I pray to Almighty God to grant mercy and forgiveness to those who lost their lives, a swift recovery to the injured, and patience and strength to the survivors,” Pezeshkian said.

The Iranian president further expressed hope that stability and calm would return to the affected areas as soon as possible.

Thousands of people displaced by a powerful earthquake in eastern Indonesia are awaiting much-needed aid as they camp out at schools, police stations and government offices, with many stuck outside.

The 7.7-magnitude quake early on Saturday killed 53 people and injured more than 100.

The number of people unable to return to their homes has risen to 12,800 by Monday morning, dispersed among several towns on Flores island, Berton Suar Pelita Panjaitan, spokesperson for the National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB) said.
