Spokesman Mocks US ‘Economic D-Day’ Threats against Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson mocked the US threats to target Iran’s revenue sources and pressure countries and companies doing business with Tehran, warning that Washington’s coercive approach amounts to systemic bullying and undermines international law.

In a post on his X account, Esmaeil Baqaei ridiculed US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s threats, arguing that Washington’s demand for banks, companies, ports and governments to comply with its dictates goes beyond Iran and threatens the principles of sovereign equality and self-determination enshrined in international law and the UN Charter.

“US: ‘Economic D-Day.’ Those who prefer to appear 'as obedient as shadows' say: ‘This is fine.’ But hold on. It is absolutely not fine,” he wrote.

“When a bully declares that every bank, company, port, and government must choose between obeying Washington’s whims or facing American vengeance, this is no longer just about Iran,” Baqaei said.

“It is about annihilating the most foundational rules of international law and the UN Charter - namely, respect for the sovereign equality and self-determination of all States,” the spokesman added.

“No decent State that values its sovereignty and national interests will accept the normalization of such grand lawlessness and systemic bullying,” he said.

“Canada is among those already learning that lesson...,” Baqaei concluded.
