Iceland Summons US Ambassador over Trump Map Showing Territories under American Flag

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iceland summoned the US ambassador on Monday after Donald Trump shared a social media image depicting Iceland and several other countries covered by the American flag, prompting a diplomatic rebuke from Reykjavik over what officials described as an inappropriate message.

The map posted by Trump on his Truth Social platform showed the United States, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean under the US flag, with the entire region labelled “United States of America.”

Trump did not provide an explanation for the post, which drew criticism in Iceland and renewed concerns over Washington’s territorial ambitions in the Arctic.

Iceland’s Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Gunnarsdottir summoned Billy Long, the US ambassador to Iceland, who only formally assumed the post last month, local broadcaster RUV reported.

“The position was clearly expressed that the post was completely inappropriate,” the foreign ministry told RUV.

The move came as Iceland continued to face growing public debate over relations with the United States and European partners amid repeated US interest in Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory.

Trump’s previous statements that the United States must acquire Greenland have increased tensions between Washington and Copenhagen, both founding members of NATO, while raising wider concerns across Europe over US intentions toward Arctic territories.

Last month, Iceland voted against reopening European Union membership talks in a referendum where Trump’s Greenland ambitions had emerged as part of the broader debate.

Supporters of renewed EU talks cited concerns about US reliability as one reason for closer ties with Europe, though analysts said domestic economic issues were the main factor influencing the outcome.

The latest Trump post appeared hours after the European Commission announced a €200 million ($232.50 million) investment in Greenland during a visit by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Meanwhile, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Greenland’s government and people had repeatedly rejected the idea of becoming part of the United States.

“The Greenlandic government and the Greenlandic people have said again and again that they do not want to be American,” she said. “I hope no one is in any doubt about that, either in the United States or the rest of the world.”
