Gorgij, the Friday prayer leader of the ‘Mohammad Rasulullah (PBUH) Mosque’ in Zahedan, succumbed to his injuries.
He was a regular participant in revolutionary and martyr commemorative ceremonies. During the US-Israeli imposed war of aggression, he repeatedly addressed street gatherings.
He is the second Sunni cleric to be martyred by unknown assailants in Sistan and Balouchestan Province this year. Earlier, Molavi Mohammad Anvar Rigi, the Sunni Friday prayer leader of Mirjaveh, was also martyred in an assassination attack.
Speaking to Tasnim, Zahedan Police Chief Hamid Nouri said that Gorgij had been targeted and assassinated by armed individuals.
He added that police officers immediately arrived at the scene after the incident was reported and began preliminary investigations and specialized measures to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
“Identifying and arresting the perpetrator or perpetrators of this act is on the police agenda, and police and intelligence investigations into the incident are ongoing,” Nouri said.
Meanwhile, the public relations office of the Quds Base of the IRGC Ground Force said that terrorist groups have turned to assassinating prominent and respected figures and clerics following their repeated defeats and the dismantling of several terrorist teams in Sistan and Balouchestan.
The statement described the groups as “treacherous terrorist groups” and said their resort to such attacks followed their successive failures.
