Araqchi made the remarks during a meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in New York on the final day of his visit to attend the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
The Iranian foreign minister briefed Guterres on the latest developments in West Asia following the US-Israeli military aggression against Iran, stressing that Iran, as a founding member of the United Nations, had expected and continues to expect the organization and its member states not to remain indifferent to violations of international law and blatant breaches of the UN Charter by a permanent member of the Security Council.
He called for an explicit condemnation of the US’ continued interventionist measures and illegal threats against the Islamic Republic.
Araqchi pointed to two rounds of illegal US and Israeli attacks against Iran during negotiations in less than a year, as well as the continuation of aggressive measures in the form of a naval blockade and economic terrorism, stressing Iran’s determination to defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity with all its capabilities.
He emphasized that the Iranian people would never abandon their demand for justice or accountability and punishment for those who ordered and carried out war crimes committed by the US and the Zionist regime.
Recalling Iran’s responsible approach toward international peace and security, Araqchi said the Islamic Republic has consistently remained committed to using diplomacy to safeguard its national interests and promote peace in the region.
He added, however, that the US has repeatedly betrayed diplomacy over the past decade and contributed to insecurity in the region by violating its commitments.
Araqchi also referred to the continuation of the Israeli regime’s genocide and warmongering in the occupied Palestinian territories, Lebanon, Syria and other regional countries, stressing the responsibility of the United Nations and the Security Council to end Israel’s impunity and halt crimes being committed in Gaza and the West Bank.
For his part, Guterres condemned violations of the fundamental principles of the UN Charter, particularly the use of force by superpowers, and stressed the need for all countries to adhere to the principles and rules of international law and use diplomacy to resolve disputes.
The meeting also addressed continued flagrant US violations of the Headquarters Agreement and Washington’s obstruction of the normal activities of Iran’s mission to the United Nations.
Araqchi conveyed Iran’s protest over the conduct of the host government in this regard and called on the UN secretary general to take the necessary measures to compel the US to fulfill its obligations.
