In a message marking World Maritime Day on Wednesday, Pezeshkian described the sea as an integral part of Iran’s history, identity and livelihood, as well as a vital resource for the country’s present and future.
He said Iran’s extensive coastlines in the north and south and its strategic location along major maritime routes have made the country an important hub for shipping and trade. Maritime activities, he added, play a key role in economic growth, regional development, job creation and international connectivity.
The president emphasized that security and development are inseparable, noting that safe seas, ports and shipping routes facilitate trade and economic activity, while economic development strengthens national capabilities.
Pezeshkian said Iran is committed to safeguarding security and stability along regional waterways and protecting maritime shipping and trade, drawing on the capabilities and experience of its naval forces and maritime professionals.
Referring to the Strait of Hormuz, he described it as one of the world’s most important maritime passages, with a significant role in regional and global security and economic affairs. He said Iran’s approach to the strategic waterway is based on responsibility and the protection of security, stability and the interests of regional countries.
Pezeshkian also praised Iranian seafarers for keeping the country’s vital maritime lifelines operational over the past year, crediting coordination among the government, private sector and security forces with helping overcome challenges.
Highlighting the importance of marine science and environmental protection, he called for greater investment in research, technology, maritime infrastructure and safety, as well as stronger participation by shipping companies, fishing communities, port operators, maritime industries, universities and coastal communities.
The president concluded by congratulating seafarers and maritime workers on World Maritime Day and paying tribute to those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
