Protests Across EU Set to Intensify as Living Costs Fuel Discontent

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Europe is bracing for a broader wave of social unrest as soaring fuel prices, the rising cost of living and a deepening housing crisis fuel public anger, with protests expected to intensify through autumn and winter ahead of crucial elections, according to reports.

World

The growing unrest reflects mounting frustration with economic policies that have left many households struggling to afford basic necessities, while governments face increasing pressure to demonstrate that they can protect ordinary people from the consequences of international crises and rising prices.

The energy shock has added to these pressures, with the US-Israeli aggression against Iran disrupting energy markets and driving up costs across Europe.

The European Commission estimates that the conflict has imposed roughly 100 billion euros ($112 billion) in additional costs on Europe, while gas prices have risen by about 140% and diesel prices have doubled, according to Reuters.

Against this backdrop, demonstrations have spread across France, Italy, Spain and Portugal, bringing together students, workers, farmers and residents angered by deteriorating public services, stagnant purchasing power and increasingly unaffordable housing.

In France, protests initially linked to deteriorating school facilities have escalated into wider unrest over living costs, while Italian farmers and truckers have taken to the streets and blocked roads to protest soaring fuel expenses.

In Spain, housing shortages and rising rents have become major political flashpoints, with demonstrators establishing protest camps in Madrid and other cities.

Portugal has also witnessed large demonstrations demanding higher wages and pensions as housing costs and everyday expenses continue to squeeze household budgets.

The economic fallout from Washington's war with Tehran has thus added another burden to European governments already struggling with domestic discontent, exposing the vulnerability of economies heavily dependent on energy markets to geopolitical escalation.

As the crisis deepens, political leaders face growing pressure to address the immediate concerns of workers and families rather than allowing the costs of international confrontation to fall disproportionately on ordinary citizens.

The unrest is also unfolding against a consequential electoral calendar.

Spain is scheduled to hold a snap parliamentary election on November 29, while France faces a presidential election in April 2027, with political uncertainty also mounting in Italy and Germany.

With protests, strikes and electoral contests converging, the coming months could test the stability of governments across the European Union, as voters increasingly demand concrete relief from the economic pressures shaping their daily lives.
