In a message to his Spanish counterpart Jose Manuel Albares, Araqchi conveyed his deep sorrow over the accident and the loss of lives, extending his heartfelt sympathies on behalf of the Iranian nation and the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
“I was deeply saddened by the occurrence of this tragic incident and the loss of a number of people,” Araqchi said in his message, asking his Spanish counterpart to accept his sincere and profound condolences.
The message came after a deadly collision between two high-speed trains in Spain on Wednesday left at least 69 people dead.
The Spanish government declared three days of national mourning following the disaster. The collision, which followed another fatal railway accident in January involving the same rail operators on the same route, has renewed scrutiny of railway safety and maintenance across the country's high-speed rail network.
