Iranian President Signs Islamabad MoU with US

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding aimed at ending the imposed war launched by the United States and the Zionist regime against Iran.

Politics

The text of the Memorandum of Understanding on ending the imposed US-Israeli war of aggression against Iran was signed by the Iranian and American presidents in the first minutes of Thursday, June 18, 2026.

The agreement was signed digitally and remotely by President Masoud Pezeshkian and his US counterpart Donald Trump within a short interval, finalizing the memorandum simultaneously without an in-person ceremony.

Iranian officials had previously stated that although negotiating teams would remain engaged in Switzerland, the signing itself would take place electronically rather than through a formal signing event.

The Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding was finalized following weeks of negotiations and was presented by Iranian officials as an initial political framework intended to halt military confrontation and establish a pathway toward a comprehensive final agreement. The document was signed in Persian and English and formally entered into effect after endorsement by the presidents of Iran and the US through a digital process.

The first article of the memorandum declares the immediate and permanent termination of military operations between Iran, the US, and their allies across all fronts, including Lebanon. The text commits both sides to refrain from future military action or threats of force and emphasizes respect for Lebanon’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. Iranian officials described the repeated references to Lebanon in the document as reflecting Tehran’s position that regional security concerns remained inseparable from the broader conflict.

Under the agreement, the parties committed to negotiating a final deal within a maximum period of 60 days. Pending that process, both sides agreed to maintain the status quo: Iran would preserve the current state of its nuclear program, while the United States would refrain from imposing new sanctions and from deploying additional military forces in the region. The final agreement is envisioned to be endorsed through a binding UN Security Council resolution.

The memorandum also sets out a phased economic and maritime framework. Washington undertook to begin lifting restrictions affecting Iran, including measures connected to oil exports, banking transactions, insurance, transportation, access to frozen assets, and the removal of the naval blockade according to agreed timelines. In parallel, Iran committed to facilitating safe commercial maritime transit through the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz and to coordinating future administrative arrangements with Oman and other regional littoral states in accordance with international law.

On the nuclear issue, the memorandum reaffirms Iran’s position that it will not seek nuclear weapons while establishing a negotiation track for enrichment issues, sanctions relief, and arrangements concerning enriched materials under a mutually agreed mechanism and with International Atomic Energy Agency supervision. Iranian officials stressed that defense and missile capabilities remain outside the scope of negotiations and stated that implementation of Iran’s commitments would remain conditional upon verified implementation of obligations by the other side.
