Plans Underway for Regional Meeting of Persian Gulf States: Iranian Spokesman

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry Esmaeil Baqaei announced that preparations are underway to hold a regional meeting attended by the Persian Gulf littoral states.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Baqaei said Iran has consistently sought to build trust and cooperation among regional countries to strengthen peace and stability in the region, free from the destructive and divisive interventions of actors from outside the region.

He described the initiative to hold a meeting of the foreign ministers of the countries bordering the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman as an important development in this direction, expressing hope that the event would help enhance understanding among regional countries and strengthen shared regional security.

According to Baqaei, the meeting will be held in Oman on Monday with the participation of Iran, Iraq and other Persian Gulf littoral states.

In addition to the regional issues, the participants will discuss the outcome of Iran-Oman negotiations concerning the establishment of safe routes for commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, he said.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman also recalled the understanding reached between Iran and Oman on temporary shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz, stressing that the Islamic Republic is committed to efforts to ensure the security of shipping through the strait.

However, he said the security of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz cannot naturally be guaranteed as long as the US' aggressive actions and illegal interventions, including its naval blockade and economic war, continue.
