Barimanlou Delivers Iran’s First Kurash Gold at Aichi-Nagoya

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Majid Vahid Barimanlou defeated Tajikistan’s Yasin Bobokulonov 1-0 in the men’s -66kg final on Tuesday to win gold in kurash and secure Iran’s first title in the discipline at the 2026 Asian Games.

Barimanlou, who received a bye in the opening round, launched his campaign with a 5-0 victory over Kyrgyzstan’s Islam Kamchybekov in the round of 16.

The Iranian then produced a dominant 10-0 quarterfinal win over Afghanistan’s Rahimullah Najmi to book his place in the semifinals and secure a medal.

Barimanlou maintained his momentum against Kyrgyzstan’s Kubanychbek Aibek Uulu, earning a 3-0 victory to punch his ticket to the gold-medal bout.

In the final, he edged Tajikistan’s Yasin Bobokulonov 1-0 to complete an unbeaten run to the title and upgrade the silver medal he won in the same weight class at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou.

Meanwhile, Iran added another medal through Fatemeh Barmaki in the women’s +87kg category.

After receiving a bye in the opening round, Barmaki defeated Chinese Taipei’s Yachung Yang 3-0 in the quarterfinals to secure her place on the podium.

She then fell 5-0 to Chinese Taipei’s Shi Liuling in the semifinals, settling for the bronze medal.

A day earlier, Ramin Ahmadzadeh had claimed silver in the men’s -81kg category, completing Iran’s kurash campaign with one gold, one silver and one bronze medal.

Kurash, a traditional Uzbek martial art, was contested over three days at the Aichi-Nagoya Games, with the final day featuring the men’s -66kg and women’s +87kg divisions.

The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games are being held from September 19 to October 4 across venues in Japan, with around 17,000 athletes and officials from 45 countries and regions competing in 43 sports.

Iran’s delegation, named “Minab Angels” in tribute to the victims of the US-Israeli attack on Shajareh Tayyebe Elementary School in Minab on February 28, is competing with 305 athletes across 38 sports.
