Kazakhstan is keen to strengthen ties with the Islamic Republic, Idrissov said during a meeting with the visiting Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in the Kazakh capital of Astana on Monday evening.

He also highlighted Iran's scientific and industrial capabilities and called for expansion of ties between Tehran and Astana in diverse areas.

During the meeting, the Iranian president expressed satisfaction with his visit to “friendly and brotherly country of Kazakhstan,” saying that he had previously held good talks with his Kazakh counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev and will discuss ways to strengthen ties between Tehran and Astana on Tuesday.

He also commented on the two countries’ capacities to promote mutual cooperation, saying that the visit could be a good starting point for the development of all-out relations between Tehran and Astana.

Rouhani on Monday started a 5-day tour of Central Asia that takes him to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, where he will attend a summit meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

The SCO is a political, economic and military organization which was founded in 2001 in Shanghai by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, and Mongolia are observer states of the SCO.
