Iran Urges Joint Int’l Counter-Terrorism Efforts after Saint Petersburg Metro Attack

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran on Monday strongly condemned the recent terrorist attack in Russia’s Saint Petersburg metro station, and renewed its call for joint global fight against terrorism.

Russian police are hunting for two suspects in the wake of a bomb blast in the St Petersburg metro system that killed at least 11 people and wounded 45 more.

An unidentified explosive device went off on a train after leaving Sennaya Ploshchad station and heading to the Technology Institute station, Russia's National Anti-Terrorist Committee said.

Russian security agencies found and defused a second explosive device at the Ploschad Vosstaniya station, one of the city's busiest stations, the committee also said.

Condemning the attack, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi expressed sympathy with bereaved families of the victims.

“We once again remind the necessity for joint international efforts for seriously confronting terrorism regardless of motivations behind it (terrorism) and believe that there is no way to uproot these violent crimes except serious resolve and determination by all states and international bodies…”
