Iran Pushing for Launch of Intra-Afghan Talks

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif briefed Afghan leaders on Tehran’s efforts to help stabilize the political situation in Afghanistan and start the intra-Afghan negotiations.

Zarif on Tuesday held separate telephone conversations with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and former chief executive officer of Afghanistan Abdullah Abdullah as part of Tehran’s attempts to help stabilize the political situation in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan for the launch of intra-Afghan negotiations.

In the conversations, the top Iranian diplomat congratulated the government and nation of neighboring Afghanistan on the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, and talked about his latest regional and international consultations over Afghanistan, the bilateral ties between Tehran and Kabul, and the fight against the coronavirus.

Last week, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman said Tehran in pushing for peace and stability in neighboring Afghanistan, stressing that such efforts are independent of the US plans.

“We hope that our efforts would yield results, an inclusive government would be formed in Afghanistan, stability and calm would return to Afghanistan, and then intra-Afghan talks would be held,” Seyed Abbas Mousavi said.
