Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian arrived in Nicaragua on Wednesday for a tour of Latin America that will take him later to Venezuela.

In a meeting in Managua, the top Iranian diplomat and his Nicaraguan counterpart Denis Moncada signed a memorandum of understanding on the mechanism for political cooperation and consultations between the foreign ministries of the two countries.

Describing the comprehensive plan for cooperation between Iran and Nicaragua that had been signed during Moncada’s visit to Tehran in December 2022 as a “new and strategic road map” to the expansion of relations, Amirabdollahian said the new MoU on political consultations paves the way for close cooperation between the foreign ministries of the two nations.

Lauding the perfect political relations between the two states, Amirabdollahian said the trade and economic cooperation is one of the major topics that needs to be pursued as a high priority.

In the gathering, also attended by Nicaraguan president’s senior assistant for investment, trade and international cooperation Laureano Ortega, the two sides weighed plans for the promotion of cooperation in the economic, scientific and technological fields.

Hailing the friendly and brotherly ties between Nicaragua and Iran, Moncada lauded the close interaction and solidarity between the two nations in the international organizations and against unilateralism.

The administration of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has frequently expressed Tehran’s readiness to boost relations with Nicaragua in various fields.

In January 2022, Amirabdollahian offered congratulations on the victory of Daniel Ortega and the Sandanista Front in Nicaragua’s presidential election, saying Iran stands ready for the expansion of cooperation and relations between the two states.
