Trump Blames Nobel Peace Prize Denial for Turning Away from Peace

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – US President Donald Trump has told Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store that he no longer feels obligated to focus solely on peace, while renewing his push for US control over Greenland, according to a letter disclosed this week.

In the letter to Store, Trump said Norway’s failure to award him the Nobel Peace Prize had altered his approach to global affairs and justified a more openly self-interested US posture.

"Dear Jonas: Since your country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for stopping 8 wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of peace, although it will always be dominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States," Trump wrote.

The message was first reported by PBS NewsHour foreign correspondent Nick Schifrin and was later confirmed by the Norwegian prime minister’s office.

In the same letter, Trump challenged Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland and claimed the Arctic island could not be defended from major powers without Washington’s direct control.

“Denmark cannot protect this land from Russia or China … The world is not safe unless we have complete and total control of Greenland,” he said.

Meanwhile, Store said the letter was sent in response to a joint message he had earlier delivered to Trump alongside Finnish President Alexander Stubb, opposing Washington’s plans to raise tariffs on Norway, Finland and other countries.

“We pointed out the need to de-escalate the exchange and requested a phone call between President Trump, President Stubb and myself,” Store told NRK.

The Norwegian leader reiterated that Oslo rejects any US claim over Greenland and continues to support Denmark’s sovereignty.

“Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and Norway fully supports the Kingdom of Denmark in this matter,” Store said.

He added that Norway also backs NATO efforts aimed at maintaining security and stability in the Arctic.

Separately, Store dismissed Trump’s assertion regarding the Nobel Peace Prize, stressing that the award is decided by an independent body.

Trump later repeated his Greenland rhetoric on his social media platform Truth Social, saying that “now is the time” to address what he described as security threats in the Arctic.

Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and has long drawn US interest because of its strategic location and mineral wealth, as well as Washington’s claims of increased Russian and Chinese activity.

Trump said on Saturday that the United States would impose 10% tariffs on goods from eight European countries — Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland — starting on Feb. 1.

He said the tariffs would rise to 25% in June, citing opposition to US control of Greenland and the dispatch of a small number of personnel to the autonomous territory.

In response, the eight European nations issued a joint statement on Sunday rejecting the US threat and reaffirming their commitment to Arctic security.
