Thabet al-Abbasi said Iraqi borders are under the control of security forces and that the army possesses high capabilities and precise plans to confront any security challenge.
“The borders of Iraq are completely secure,” al-Abbasi said, adding that “terrorists have no room to show their presence.”
Meanwhile, al-Abbasi stressed that Iraqi authorities are closely monitoring regional developments and will not allow any threat, including movements by Daesh (ISIL of ISIS) elements, to undermine Iraq’s security and stability.
In a related development, Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari said late on Monday that Iraqi officials are closely following developments in Syria on a daily basis.
“We are monitoring the situation in Syria every day,” al-Shammari said.
Al-Shammari added that such developments had been anticipated several years ago.
“We had predicted the occurrence of these events three years ago,” he said.
Meanwhile, the deputy commander of Iraq’s Joint Operations Command said security along the border with Syria is fully ensured.
Qais al-Muhammadawi said military units are prepared to confront any attempt by terrorist groups to enter or approach the Iraqi-Syrian border.
