Citibank Branches in Dubai, Manama Targeted in Drone Attacks

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Citibank branches in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain’s capital of Manama were targeted by unidentified drones Friday night.

Economy

Amid the security developments resulting from the US-Israeli war on Iran, some financial centers in the Persian Gulf region were targeted by unidentified drone attacks, among which were offices related to the American bank Citigroup, a bank that is considered one of the most important players in the global financial system and the US dollar network.

Attack in Dubai’s financial district

This area is considered one of the most important financial hubs in the Middle East and hosts the offices of many international banks and investment institutions, including Citibank. After the incident, some international banks removed their employees from the buildings and continued some of their activities remotely.

Also, following increasing security concerns, Citibank regional branches announced that they have temporarily suspended some of their in-person activities in the UAE.

Reports of attacks in Bahrain

At the same time, reports of drone and missile attacks were also published in the city of Manama, Bahrain. Bahrain is one of the important centers of the US military and economic presence in the Persian Gulf and is also home to the United States Fifth Fleet.

Citibank's place in the global financial system

Citibank, a subsidiary of the Citigroup financial group, is one of the largest international banks in the world and operates in more than 100 countries. The bank plays an important role in several key areas:

Settling dollar transactions in global trade

Financing international trade and energy

Providing financial services to multinational companies and investment funds

Managing bank transfers in emerging markets

In the Persian Gulf region, the bank’s offices in Dubai and Bahrain are also the main centers for managing dollar transactions for oil companies, sovereign wealth funds, and international companies.

Role in energy and oil trade

In the Middle East, Citibank is one of the banks active in the field of energy trade financing. The bank provides services such as issuing letters of credit, financing oil contracts, and settling energy transactions for companies active in the global oil market.

For this reason, some analysts believe that the targeting of the bank’s offices, in addition to its symbolic aspect, could be a sign of the expansion of the scope of the conflict to economic and financial infrastructure related to the West.

Concerns about the spread of conflict to the financial sector

Economic experts believe that even if the physical damage is limited, attacks on international financial centers could have consequences such as increased investment risk, higher insurance costs, and disruption to the activities of multinational companies in the region.

Meanwhile, some analysts have warned that if such attacks continue, the security of the Persian Gulf financial centers may become a new dimension of geopolitical competition in the current crisis.
