Speaking at a weekly press conference on Monday, Baqaei said the Israeli regime remains “the biggest threat to international peace and security” and continues to commit grave crimes in Lebanon and the occupied Palestinian territories.
He noted that despite the announcement of an apparent ceasefire in Lebanon, the Arab country continues to face unprecedented violations and repeated breaches of its sovereignty by the Zionist regime.
“A large number of Lebanese citizens have been martyred and hundreds of thousands have been displaced,” Baqaei said, criticizing the United Nations and the UN Security Council for inaction in the face of the situation.
He warned that impunity for Israeli war crimes and genocide would have consequences for the entire international community and global peace.
Addressing the issue of a ceasefire across regional fronts and the Israeli occupation in Lebanon, Baqaei said the region continues to suffer from the Zionist regime’s warmongering policies.
“For the past 80 years, the (Israeli) regime has waged a permanent war against the region,” he said, adding that recent developments constitute a violation of the April 8 ceasefire.
“We emphasize that a ceasefire in Lebanon is an inseparable part of any understanding aimed at ending the war,” the spokesman stated.
Commenting on the Lebanese government’s response to Israeli actions, Baqaei said defending national sovereignty is one of the primary responsibilities of any state and that governments are obligated to safeguard their borders and territorial integrity.
He said Lebanon’s resistance movement has been the main obstacle to Israeli expansionism over the past decades, adding that recent events have further demonstrated the importance of the resistance in defending the Arab country.
“In the end, it is the duty of every sovereign government to defend itself,” Baqaei said, adding, “We consider ourselves committed to sparing no effort to help Lebanon.”
