Araqchi: US Responsible for Implementing Agreement

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi emphasized that the US bears responsibility for implementing the Islamabad understanding.

Araqchi held separate telephone conversations with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty on Monday morning to discuss the process and provisions of the Islamabad understanding.

During the talks, Araqchi emphasized that the US is responsible for ensuring implementation of the agreement and underscored the need for a complete halt to the Zionist regime’s aggression and destabilizing attacks against Lebanon.

The Iranian foreign minister also appreciated the positions adopted by Turkey, Iraq, and Egypt and their role in supporting the establishment of a ceasefire, reducing tensions, and advancing diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring stability and security in the region.

Araqchi and his counterparts further stressed the importance of continuing consultations and close cooperation regarding regional developments and highlighted the need to strengthen diplomatic efforts to preserve regional peace and stability.

The calls came after Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that a peace deal had been reached between Iran and the US following weeks of negotiations mediated by Pakistan with support from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. According to Sharif, the agreement provides for the immediate and permanent end of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, and is scheduled to be formally signed in Switzerland on June 19.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi later confirmed that the memorandum of understanding (MoU) had been finalized, saying Tehran had incorporated its key positions into the text and would verify implementation of US commitments before entering further negotiations. He said the agreement includes the lifting of the US naval blockade and a phased process toward broader talks on sanctions relief, reconstruction, and other issues.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council subsequently announced that the finalized MoU would end war and military operations across all fronts and that future negotiations would proceed only after implementation of commitments by the other side. An informed source also said that final amendments proposed by Iran included provisions related to the management of the Strait of Hormuz and guarantees for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
