Qalibaf made the remarks in a post on his X account in response to Scott Bessent, who has claimed that while the Iranian people struggle to afford basic necessities, the Iranian government continues to spend enormous sums abroad.
“Instead of funneling billions to its terrorist proxy, Israel, and 750 bases, this failing empire could spend that cash on its own people, but nah, that'd make too much sense for this regime,” Qalibaf wrote.
“Scotty, man [?], your credibility is on the line. Do something,” he added.
The Iranian Parliament speaker also attached a link to a New York Times article titled “Bessent Faces Credibility Test in Quest to Tame Markets.”
The article examines Bessent’s efforts to influence US financial markets and the economy, highlighting challenges including rising borrowing costs, the country’s mounting debt, inflation concerns and the economic effects of the war of aggression against Iran.
