The tools, known as ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government, have been added to GenAI.mil, a centralized portal through which the US Department of War is expanding its access to commercial frontier AI systems.
GenAI.mil, which initially offered Google Gemini, is designed to provide Pentagon personnel with access to commercial AI models while preventing sensitive government data from passing through ordinary consumer channels.
In particular, the military platform is exempt from data collection practices that are difficult for users to avoid in consumer technology products.
According to the Department of War, GenAI.mil has already onboarded more than 1.7 million unique users from the department’s 3 million personnel.
The latest additions form part of Washington’s broader effort to harness AI to accelerate the operations of its massive military establishment and preserve its technological edge.
They also underscore the Pentagon’s willingness to deepen its ties with major technology companies while sidelining firms that resist unrestricted military access to their AI systems.
Anthropic’s Claude model is notably absent from the platform following a dispute between the Pentagon and the AI company.
The Trump administration labeled Anthropic a supply-chain risk after the company refused to grant the Pentagon unrestricted use of its AI tools and instead demanded certain safety guardrails.
Anthropic is currently challenging the designation in court.
ChatGPT Mil, developed through the company’s OpenAI for Government program, will offer an experience familiar to commercial ChatGPT users.
According to the War Department, the tool will focus on chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs.
It will also support document-heavy and routine unclassified work, including administrative tasks, logistics, planning, and policy.
Other features are expected to be added over time.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon described Grok’s role in considerably broader and more explicitly militarized terms.
“Starshield AI’s Grok for Government will provide the warfighter with immediate productivity gains, stronger knowledge continuity and more secure and efficient collaboration,” according to the War Department’s press release.
SpaceX’s Starshield AI is a secure satellite network that uses the company’s existing Starlink technology.
The department further stated that Grok would enable the US military “to execute missions faster and with greater precision across numerous operational contexts, ranging from market research analysis for acquisition professionals to supply-chain management for logisticians.”
More broadly, the Pentagon has struck agreements with a growing number of major technology companies as it seeks to expand the role of AI across the US military machine.
Those companies include Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI.
