Brigadier General Yahya Saree, spokesman for the Yemeni Armed Forces, said in a statement that the operation used dozens of missiles and drones and targeted fighter jet hangars, radars, runways and ammunition depots at the base.
The Yemeni Armed Forces said the strikes hit their intended targets accurately and caused heavy damage to the base.
The statement said the operation was carried out in response to an escalation in Saudi attacks on Yemen, alleging that Saudi F-15 and Typhoon fighter jets had conducted more than 300 airstrikes on several Yemeni provinces from bases in Khamis Mushait and Taif over the past five days.
The Yemeni Armed Forces said their operations will continue deep inside Saudi territory as long as Riyadh continues its “brutal aggression” against the Yemeni people.
It warned that any new aggression will be met with a broader and more intense operation.
The Yemeni Armed Forces also invoked what it called the “siege for siege and escalation for escalation” equation, saying it will continue targeting gatherings of Saudi mercenaries until the aggression stops and the siege is lifted.
Meanwhile, Yemeni military sources said the expansion of attacks against Saudi Arabia was demonstrating Sanaa’s growing ability to strike targets deep inside the kingdom.
The sources said Yemeni forces had expanded their attacks in recent days while carrying out heavy strikes against Saudi-backed forces, following 129 Saudi air attacks on six Yemeni provinces.
They said Sanaa had also targeted the command and control center at the Sharurah Air Base in southeastern Saudi Arabia and disabled the Khamis Mushait Air Base.
Over the past two days, the Yemeni Armed Forces have expanded their new wave of attacks against several military bases in southern and southeastern Saudi Arabia, with some of the facilities reportedly being completely disabled.
The Sharurah base in southeastern Saudi Arabia was reportedly targeted by Yemeni missiles and drones for the first time.
The operations, which the sources said involved ballistic and cruise missiles as well as advanced drones, were described as direct deterrence and retaliation for Saudi airstrikes on six Yemeni provinces.
The Yemeni sources said the attacks conveyed several messages to Riyadh, including that Sanaa possesses significant air deterrence capabilities and can maneuver against and overcome Saudi air defense systems while maintaining the ability to strike targets across the kingdom.
