Musk’s SpaceX Pledge to Millions of US Children Could Deliver Political Gains for Trump

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Elon Musk’s proposed $10.7bn stock giveaway to US children raises questions about the tax advantages available to billionaires who donate appreciated shares and the broader benefits that could accrue to Musk’s business interests and President Donald Trump’s political agenda.

World

Elon Musk’s pledge to give a SpaceX share to every child in the United States next year, potentially worth $10.7bn, has raised questions about the political and financial interests behind the announcement, which comes just two weeks before the November 3 midterm elections as President Donald Trump faces declining approval ratings and Republicans confront the prospect of electoral losses.

“This will be the first of many,” Musk wrote on X on Monday, announcing a proposal that could reach approximately 73 million children under 18.

Trump welcomed the pledge on Truth Social, saying the shares would be distributed through “TRUMP ACCOUNTS”, the tax-advantaged investment accounts established under his signature tax and spending law.

The announcement presents itself as a major financial gift to American families, but its timing, structure and potential tax advantages raise questions about who stands to benefit most.

SpaceX shares were trading at approximately $146, valuing the proposed distribution at around $10.7bn, although the company’s stock has been volatile since its June listing on the Nasdaq at $135 per share.

Musk owns 4.8 billion SpaceX shares outright, with his total stake rising to approximately 6.4 billion shares when unvested awards and stock options are included.

Distributing 73 million shares would reduce his outright holdings by roughly 1.5 percent while leaving his control largely intact, as his voting power would decline by only 0.1 percentage points from approximately 82 percent, according to a Bloomberg Opinion calculation.

However, the mechanics of the giveaway remain unclear.

Musk has not specified which children would qualify or when and how the shares would be transferred, while Trump has tied the proposal directly to the accounts bearing his name.

The White House says nearly 70 million Trump accounts have been opened, with investments benefiting from tax-deferred growth until withdrawal or transfer into a qualifying retirement account.

Treasury rules published on September 30 allow donors to contribute individual company shares, although families generally cannot sell gifted shares for five years or until the end of the year in which a child turns 17, whichever comes first.

Beyond the promise of free shares, the arrangement could offer substantial advantages to Musk himself.

Donating appreciated stock can allow donors to avoid capital gains taxes and potentially claim tax deductions, meaning a contribution of shares that Musk acquired at a relatively low cost could help him avoid a potentially multibillion-dollar tax liability if he sold them instead.

The proposal could also create millions of additional stakeholders whose financial interests become tied to SpaceX’s performance, potentially strengthening public support for the company while increasing pressure to limit its regulatory burdens.

Politically, the announcement offers Trump an opportunity to promote a signature legislative achievement ahead of elections that will determine control of Congress.

Musk, who contributed more than $276m to Republican groups since July, previously fell out with Trump in 2025 over the president’s tax-and-spending legislation before the two publicly reconciled.

The pledge therefore arrives amid an increasingly visible relationship between immense private wealth and American electoral politics.

Economist Mitchell Downey of Stockholm University’s Institute for International Economic Studies said the proposal also resembles longstanding progressive calls for universal child investment accounts, illustrating how an initiative associated with reducing wealth inequality could now advance through a system carrying Trump’s political branding.

Downey said he did not believe the proposal itself raised legal concerns, provided it was properly reported and did not involve an explicit exchange of money for political favors.

Nevertheless, he warned that the broader issue remained the disproportionate influence of wealthy donors over US elections.

Unlike charitable initiatives focused on global health, such as the Gates Foundation’s long-term funding commitments in Africa and South Asia, Musk’s proposal directly involves American children, a politically consequential tax structure and a president seeking to preserve his party’s congressional power.

Whether the promised shares ultimately reach eligible children remains uncertain, but the announcement has already demonstrated how a billionaire’s proposed gift can simultaneously serve financial, corporate and political interests.
