Iran, African Nations Seek to Expand Agricultural Cooperation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran on Saturday hosted the first national conference on agricultural cooperation with African countries, with Agriculture Minister Gholamreza Nouri calling for joint investment, technology transfer and expanded trade ties.

The conference, held in Tehran on October 31, brought together 15 African ambassadors and diplomats and over 200 business representatives.

Addressing the event, Nouri said Iran’s trade with African countries reached about $940 million in the first nine months of the previous Iranian year, stressing that the figure remains far below the continent’s economic potential.

He said Iran views Africa not merely as a market for its products or a source of imports, but as an important partner for joint production, investment and technology transfer. He identified agricultural technology, modern irrigation, water and soil management, greenhouse cultivation, livestock and poultry production, fisheries, food processing and agricultural machinery as key areas for cooperation.

Nouri proposed four main priorities for expanding ties: balanced and market-oriented trade, scientific and technological cooperation, joint investment in agricultural value chains, and the removal of practical obstacles to business activities. He also highlighted the importance of training African specialists and implementing joint projects based on the needs of partner countries.

The minister said Iran has already held technical training courses for delegations from countries such as Ghana and Senegal and had pursued economic cooperation mechanisms with Ghana, Senegal, Tanzania and Kenya. He called for greater involvement of the private sector, saying governments should facilitate cooperation while businesses take the lead in implementing joint projects.

Addressing the impact of international conflicts on food security, Nouri warned that military tensions and disruptions are putting pressure on global food and energy markets, disproportionately affecting low-income populations. He stressed that food security should not become a tool of political pressure and called for practical cooperation to ensure sustainable access to food.

He said the success of Iran-Africa cooperation should be measured by implemented agreements, completed projects and tangible economic benefits rather than the number of meetings or documents signed.
