Iran Mobilizes 18,000 Emergency Teams As Heavy Rains Hit Several Provinces

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran has placed 18,000 emergency response teams on alert, deploying 26,000 pieces of engineering equipment and specialized machinery as heavy rainfall, flooding and landslides affect several provinces across the country.

Omid Mohtarami, spokesperson for the National Crisis Management Organization, said on Saturday red and orange weather warnings have been issued for 19 provinces, with the highest-level alerts covering six areas.

He reported that 140 millimeters of rain had fallen in Sepiddasht in Lorestan Province over the past 24 hours, while Koohrang, Khuzestan’s Lalar and Marivan recorded 100, 95 and 80 millimeters, respectively.

Meanwhile, Mojtaba Khaledi, spokesperson for the Iranian Red Crescent Society, said rescue teams have carried out six operations in Isfahan, Lorestan, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, and Alborz provinces over the past 24 hours, assisting 69 people.

The operations included responding to flooded homes and roads, extricating a vehicle from mud, and providing emergency shelter for 11 nomads whose tents were affected by flooding.

According to reports, landslides have temporarily blocked several roads, while a section of the southern railway in Lorestan remains closed after a rockslide, leaving four trains halted and passengers being evacuated to the nearest station.

Officials have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel, riverbanks and flood-hit routes, never drive through flooded roads, stay away from high ground and trees during lightning, and refrain from moving livestock in affected areas.

Lightning strikes have killed 10 people in Iran since the beginning of the current Persian year’s autumn season.
