Sharif announced early Thursday that the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding had been signed electronically by the presidents of Iran and the United States.
In a post on his X account, the Pakistani premier said the memorandum had been signed by the presidents of both countries and endorsed by Pakistan in its role as mediator.
“The signing of this agreement at the highest level of the respective governments demonstrates the commitment of both sides to a diplomatic resolution of the conflict,” he stated, Dawn reported.
Sharif added that the memorandum entered into force immediately and said, as an initial step, Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz while the United States would begin lifting the naval blockade.
His post initially stated that Pakistan, with support from Qatar, would host an official ceremony in Switzerland on June 19 to commemorate the agreement and launch technical-level negotiations. However, the reference was later removed after Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei announced that no signing ceremony would be held because the presidents of Iran and the US had already finalized the agreement digitally.
Sharif congratulated US President Donald Trump and praised what he described as Washington’s preference for diplomacy and peaceful conflict resolution, saying such efforts had helped prevent wider regional consequences.
The Pakistani prime minister further expressed appreciation for Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Mojtaba Khamenei and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, praising their wisdom and political judgment in supporting efforts aimed at achieving peace.
Sharif also recognized the role of Iran’s negotiating team, including Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Abbas Araqchi and Eskandar Momeni, saying their patience, perseverance and commitment to constructive engagement contributed significantly to finalizing the memorandum.
In addition, he acknowledged the involvement of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt in supporting diplomatic efforts and paid tribute to Pakistan’s Chief of Defense Staff and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, describing his contribution as instrumental in facilitating the breakthrough.
Sharif concluded by expressing hope that the memorandum would become a lasting basis for greater understanding, mutual respect and shared prosperity across the region.
