Trump told the New York Times today that Iran would be allowed to enrich uranium at low levels.
The signed memorandum of understanding between Iran and the US does not include an agreement on the nuclear issue, but Trump’s statement is a retreat from some of his previous excessive demands.
Nonetheless many other retreats by Trump in this area are necessary for the realization of a future agreement, one that Iran’s experience with America’s breach of promise suggests is unlikely.
While the US president’s statement does not mean that Iran would accept what he tries to impose, Trump's retreat from his previous position is clear.
Iran insists that it must secure its rights and that Trump’s backsliding will not affect the country’s positions.
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has said the memorandum of understanding (MoU) announced by Tehran and Washington on Monday morning will end war on all fronts, including Lebanon.
The SNSC secretariat said in a statement that the MoU will be officially signed on Friday, June 19.
Talks toward a final agreement will be postponed until after the other side has implemented its commitments under the memorandum, the secretariat said.
The statement expressed gratitude to Pakistan and Qatar for their mediation efforts.
The signing ceremony is set to take place in Switzerland.
